The office of Carolina Advanced Digital started in Siler City, NC with our President, John Jabbusch, a stack of plain business cards, and a single brown phone in 1984. By 1985 the company was officially formed and servicing a select group of enterprise customers, mostly in North Carolina. By 1993, John’s wife Susan Jabbusch bought out John’s partner, making it a real family-owned business. At the beginning of the company’s growth, Carolina Advanced Digital offered enterprise networking and custom system design. John’s home office sported a VAX running VMS, two workstations with digitizing tablets, an unusually tall tape rack, and then a variety of Apple and DOS, then Windows computers. Occasionally we still find a random tape reel, a box of unopened floppies, and the rare greenbar printer paper hidden in crevices or boxes, relics which remind us of the first years in business.
Thirty years later, much has changed, but the core values and mission remain the same: We help clients achieve their mission through exceptional engineering. John started the mission in 1984, and we continue on that path today.
In the last 30 years, Carolina Advanced Digital has grown and evolved continuously to meet the ever-changing demands of technologies and customer needs. Our enterprise services throughout our existence have been peppered with other solution offerings including our ISP services to rural North Carolina, break-fix tech services for SMBs and consumers, as well as a MSP offering for SMBs.
Our solutions and competencies also evolve, leading with enterprise wireless solutions back in the 1990s, then layering advanced security technologies in the early 2000s. In 2003, we were awarded our own GSA Schedule for federal contracting, and our federal business continues to grow to this day, with expansion to prime vendors on notable and exclusive contracts such as NASA’s SEWP and our designations as both a certified Veteran-Owned Business and HUBZone.
Throughout our history, we’ve had the pleasure of working with some amazing people, partners, customers, and of course our own team members. We’ve also received numerous awards and recognition for our company and team, including Top Business Leader, Tech Woman of the Year, Top 10 to Watch in Security, and more.
Carolina Unmanned Vehicles (CUV) is a small woman-owned company founded in 1993 with an initial market focus on Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). Since 2000 CUV has added several versions of a small mobile tethered blimp, the Lightweight Aerostat System (LAS), carrying electronic payloads up to 30 kg. LAS is adaptable to COMINT / SIGINT payloads and communications relays and can carry Electro-Optic and IR payloads for very long term surveillance of logistics sites, camps and other facilities. Customers’ include the Army, USAF, Lockheed Martin Corporation and Sandia National Laboratory. In 2011 / 12 CUV delivered the Small Tactical Multi-Payload Aerostat System (STMPAS), which were deployed to Afghanistan. STMPAS provides Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capability for small tactical units in Afghanistan and other locations. Non-military applications include law enforcement, border security and research.
Recent additional projects in the small UAS arena include a unique Counter UAS system, the EXCIPIO UAS Interception System being developed jointly by Carolina Unmanned Vehicles and Theiss UAV Solutions. The EXCIPIO (“I capture” in Latin) is a small UAS that can intercept a threat UAS, and employ a rapidly ejected net to ensnare the threat UAS, entangling the rotors or propellers. Excipio offers a true “surgical” precision required to intercept and neutralize a UAS threat, regardless of electronic shielding, type, or size of airframe. It is completely effective against UAS with fully autonomous navigation and control systems. EXCIPIO can be a standalone interception and defeat system or be used in conjunction with other detection systems.
